The Discipline of Doing for Self

Growing up in the Bronx, you encounter every kind of person imaginable. You meet intellectuals who can dissect any issue, athletes chasing greatness, hustlers creating opportunities where none seem to exist, criminals trapped in destructive cycles, and countless others searching for their place in the world. Yet what is too often overlooked is the education that comes from simply surviving inner-city life.

Many people see the inner city as a curse. I see it differently. I believe it can be one of life's greatest classrooms. It teaches awareness, resilience, adaptability, and the ability to read people and situations before they unfold. Those are survival skills that no textbook can fully teach. The tragedy is that too many people learn how to survive but never learn how to transform survival into ownership, leadership, and legacy.

That reality is reflected in Alicia Keys and Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind: "In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do." Those lyrics are more than entertainment—they are a challenge. New York will either break you or prepare you. The choice belongs to the individual.

Throughout my life, I have watched far too many young men possess tremendous talent yet lack the leadership, intellectual capital, and discipline necessary to achieve their potential. I often ask myself why. Is it because they no longer observe the world around them? Is it because they have stopped reading? Or is it because they are simply afraid to confront the truth about what success really demands? Success is not built on talent alone. It is built on preparation, sacrifice, and the courage to think independently.

Marcus Garvey addressed this very issue in 1922 at the 71st Regiment Armory in New York City when he declared that "the average Black fails to understand his own possibilities and potentialities. He lacks confidence and courage, believing that nature never intended him to do for himself." More than a century has passed, yet those words still echo through our communities.

His message came rushing back to me during the New York Knicks championship parade.

As my daughter and I rode the train into Manhattan, I casually said, "I wonder if I'm going to run into my childhood friend Teddy. Whenever there's a major event in the USA, he's usually out selling T-shirts."

By the time we exited the station and walked just two blocks, there he was.

I hadn't seen Teddy in over a decade, but I wasn't surprised. We embraced, caught up for a few minutes, and then continued toward the parade.

A few moments later, my daughter looked at me and said, "Daddy, he just made about $300 in five minutes."

I smiled and replied, "That's what happens when you own your business."

Then I added, "That's also what happens when you're disciplined."

There were nearly two million people at that parade. Most came to celebrate. Teddy came to capitalize on an opportunity. That is the difference.

I knew he would be there—not because I possess some extraordinary intuition, but because I know his character. Discipline leaves fingerprints. Character creates consistency. When a man commits himself to doing for self, he doesn't wait for opportunities to knock; he positions himself where opportunities are certain to appear.

Too many people spend their lives hoping someone else will open a door for them. Men like Teddy bring their own door, build their own house, and invite others inside.

The greatest lesson the Bronx ever taught me was not simply how to survive. It taught me to recognize the difference between people who merely exist and people who intentionally create value. One mindset waits for permission. The other accepts responsibility.

History has never been changed by those waiting to be chosen. It has always been changed by those disciplined enough to choose themselves.
